Wolf’s Rain review - 45/100

Just a moment ago I finished this anime. An interesting note with that is that I started to watch this in Februar. It’s August by now. That means it took me half a year to get to watch it. And don’t get me wrong, this is not due to the problem of slow subbers. No, it’s because I couldn’t watch more then 3 episodes in the month. This month I have the record of 10 episodes. Hoorray for me. Anyway, the side note. Wolf’s Rain is well, you could call it quite interesting. The plot is something weird as well. According to this anime, humans are born out of wolfs. Yes. Wolfs are supposed to be death for 200 years, and there was no survival. Yes. But wait, there are! Those wolfs that are remained left, are heading for Paradise. A place only wolfs can open. Yes. With those quest, they need a Flower Girl (once again, Yes), that can talk and can sing and looks just like a human. Oh btw, wolfs are deceiving humans. Every wolf in this anime has two artstyles: One human, and one wolf. Then I keep on wondering.. How on earth this those wolfs get those shoes? If they are in the wolf form, do they have the shoes left? Because when they turn back, they have the shoes. But they don’t when they are wolfs. Just a small note. This may look good on paper, but this anime fails and fails.

The biggest problem in this anime is that the creators tried to experiment with the word ‘coincidence’. People or wolfs keep on running in to each other with NO reason at all. And this happens every episode, at least 5 times. And the fun continues! The creators meant all this horse crap serious. Even the lovers. This even becomes laughable at one moment, the legendary scene of a beautiful woman and a beautiful men running around happily in a flowerfeild. And this is meant serious. I don’t know if anyone here has ever watched Excel Saga? Well, watch that before you watch this because it will make this anime a lot more fun.^^ (I talk about episode 22, with the alien that reminded Hyatt when they were small, the same thing, only meant serious.) I would also like to know how on earth those wolfs can jump a distance of 30 meters without any problem. If anyone has the answer, please tell me.^^ Those wolfs are just as fast when they are running for like a month, without much food and drink, and they are moving just as fast as the space ships of the badguys. Yeah. There are a lot of mistakes in this anime. Wolfs get shot for really no reason and the next episode they are just as jumpy as always and like nothing happened. For one example.

And I haven’t even started about the predictability-level of this anime. Every episode you know what’s going to happen. At least 5 minutes before it actually happens. This can be a lot of fun, I have to say that. Episode 11 really made it laugh by it, that was the worst.

Also, the main characters. We have the lonely silent though dude, of course the annoying little brat (that really annoyed the hell out of me with his whining), the carefree guy and the punk. All of them are stupid enough to take the flower girl that needs water and light to survive to the ’Forest of Death’ (corny, isn’t it?), a place that has no water and no light, and are suprised afterwords that she almost died. That was the most stupid scene ever. And don’t get me started about the giant half blinded Walrus and the annoying know-it-all Owl. That was .. stupid. The side characters are interesting as well, an old man with a dog that hunts for wolfs because he hates them. The ironic part is that his dog is in fact, a wolf. Of course. We also have the work-a-holic woman and the divorced man of her. Duuuh. The reason that I couldn’t watch more then 3 episodes in the month is because of the old man because he can give me headache with his whining and drinking.

O btw, this anime has the record of not one, not two, not three, but 4 frigging recap episode. I really recommend to anyone to skip episode 15 untill episode 19. Or, start to watch episode 15 and skip the frigging rest that went before it. You won’t miss anything. Then the fun and the drama continues. The drama is btw really heavy, but it is so stupid sometimes that I really laugh about it.

But I have to say that when episode 27 comes that everything takes a weird turn. My explination for it is that the creators finally realised that every character had to die at least one time in the anime because he got hurt or shot or something, and the creators try to make up for it to kill off more then the half of the cast. For really no reason at all. That was also interesting. Episode 27, 28 and 29 are better written then the rest, untill you slap yourself on the forehead once again because you find out the direction the anime is going for the end. That is the most corny end ever.

Another small notes, this is a high-budget anime. The art looks nice, the music is nice. But I have to get over the scene where two parties killed of eachother and the last guy standing was killed by an armoury. Or so it looked. There are a lot of more mistakes during this anime, but I won’t name them all. I recommend this anime for one that wants to critize an anime, and for one that likes highlighted anime. And for one that is bored.

  3. @ Dude. First of all: How old are you anyway? You can’t be older then 15 years. You are missing my point, and I guess even when I explain it again to you, it doesn’t matter. Because you called me a noob. Firstly I would like to know what you are then, because I had to read your comments at least 10 times before I understood what the hell you were talking about. Learn your English, please. And don’t call people names, because those names say more about you then it does about me.

Anyway. Wolfs Rain. Really? Didn’t you see that when they transformed, they didn’t lose their clothes? As long as I know, clothes are not part of the human body, unless you are really such a know-it-all. And when they transform back, they have those clothes once again. I wonder if you have ever seen the anime Fruits Basket, because THEY understood the point that clothes are not part of the human body and can’t transform with the body itself. That you haven’t seen any decent anime is not my problem.

Yes. I know that no anime can be perfect. But it was the number of things that didn’t make any senSe.

I advise you to grow up, and watch this anime once again when you can take my critism. Don’t turn off your mind when you are watching anime, you might buy all the horse crap they are trying to sell to you.

I think I might have to thank you because you really made me laugh with your silly comment. Have fun being an adolescent who can’t think for himself yet and can’t take any critism.

    Positive Energy,

  4. hey, i really liked your oppinion, actually i like your irony.
But i think this anime is much deeper than the surface would let you believe.
And about the cloth-issue,this isn’t sailor moon, they weren’t transforming, they were”optical illusions” :P , the whole time they remained wolves…

  5. Hey Ana! Thanks for the comment. I also believe that there is something much deeper than the surface showed. But I couldn’t see it and I had too much fun with laughing because of this anime.^^

I believe you are right about the cloths thingey, this anime makes a little more sense after that. But you can’t deny that the scene with the giantic walrus was just hilarious.^^

  6. I haven’t really watched much anime but out of the ones Iv seen, this has been my favorite only because it does what its supposed to, anime and cartoons shouldn’t be so realistic that you can’t see out side the box, even though its not an anime look at Star Wars I love how the whole story is an fantasy thats what more animes need really, we have more then enough “reality” shows going on that an anime that isnt accurat (like wolf’s running forever) to me I understood as the wolf’s being more then just the average wolf we know because in the anime humans were born from them, so Im sure they weren’t just normal. And about the forest of death, it was the only route they could have taken without being captured, the fact that they didnt think about Cheza (being a flower) is also fantasy in the sence that she is not a human nor a flower so obviously you wouldn’t know really what to do with her you know? Like its easy for you to have said oh why didnt the wolf’s think of it because in Hindsite you already knew you know, so I still like this anime even with its “mistakes” but thats why its called anime

  7. Actually, the becoming human is just an illusion. That’s why when they turn back into wolves they don’t have clothes. For example, when Hige asked Blue to take his collar off she couldn’t, because she had to bite it. If she was actually transformed into a human she could have unbuckled it with her hands, but unfortunately her human form was an illusion and she didn’t actually have thumbs.

  8. Ah, your entitled to your opinion. But really, it’s only an enjoyable anime for those who can comprehend it’s depth… For instance, you can’t take your mind off of where there clothes go?? Are you serious? Is that really even a complaint??? After all, how would it look if wolves were just talking to eachother..? It’s called CONCEPT. This anime is VERY conceptual, and you probably won’t find what the average anime-goer likes in it. I, myself, think this is one of the best animes made and very well done. So, if maybe if you took your mind off of why the wolves can jump high and place it more on the story, you’d get more out of it. =D
